Mapema Wines

Argentina

Mapema was started by two of Argentina’s most pretigious winemakers Jose (Pepe) Galante formerly (for 34 years)  head winemaker of Catena winery, and Mariano di Paolo who has been production manager and head winemaker at the prestigious Rutini Wines since 1995.

These longtime friends and esteemed winemakers who are widely recognized as two of Argentina's most talented winemakers and educators, have a history of rich individual accomplishments. They joined forces with one thought in mind: take the expertise and experience of two seasoned winemakers, search out the best possible grape sources in Mendoza, and make superior wines from each harvest.  Their philosophy is that the winemaker's role is to preserve the fruit's full spectrum of flavors and aromas by the most gentle and natural handling of the wines.  They realized their dream with Mapema!  The name "mapema" is a combination of the first two letters of the partners' first names. Mariano seemed to think that he was more important so his name appears twice. Pepe often will say, however, that it takes two of Mariano to match the talent of one Pepe!

The latest news with Mapema is that, as of Sept 2011, Pepe has sold his share of Mapema in order to embark on a new wine venture with his family.  Mariano de Paolo will continue producing Mapema wines.

The high altitude, fresh air and intense sun of this Malbec vineyard in Consulta, Mendoza have contributed to the formation of this profound Malbec.  Twelve months in new French oak has produced a wine with aromas of black cherry, combined harmoniously with fine notes of chocolate and tobacco, a rich fruit character, and smooth tannins.

The purest expression of the Sauvignon Blanc variety occurs in cool climates.  The vines are cultivated at an elevation of 3900 feet in the foothills of the Andes in the region named Tupungato.  The viticulture techniques are strictly controlled to concentrate the flavour characteristics of this varietal.  Floral aromas of lime and melon along with a full body, produce a wine which is fulfilling alone or as a great accompaniment to food.
